Your phone number will be deleted if the phone number is active on the Vodacom network for a period of 6 months or longer. What this means that should you not recharge, make or receive calls for a period of 6 months or longer you will lose the number.
If you lose your phone with your Vodacom SIM card and the phone number is not active, the number will eventually be deleted. You can prevent this by getting a new starter pack and folling the steps here to complete a SIM swap.

Yes he meant to say INACTIVE SIM
Its stated HERE that:
10.1 Vodacom may from time to time, by giving you advance notice where reasonably practicable and dependent on the circumstances, suspend the Services or disconnect your Cellphone Number from the Network for a period to be determined by Vodacom, in any one of the following circumstances -
10.1.1 if the Service has not been used by you for a period in excess of 6 (six) months;
